SP-OT'ed Suicide Prevention, a talk by the charity PAPYRUS (Prevention of Young Suicide)

SP-OT'ed, a talk on suicide prevention is a session run by the charity PAPYRUS (Prevention of Young Suicide). It will be held on 19th February from 6pm until 7:30pm. Tickets are £3 for members and £4 for non-members, with £2 from each ticket going to PAPYRUS to help with their ongoing work. The event will be held on Zoom or Teams, however there are a maximum of 30 places available due to constraints set by PAPYRUS, so tickets will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The link to the event will be provided closer to the date.

The talk's key objectives are:

  • To understand the prevalence and impact of suicide
  • To explore the language, and the challenges, when talking openly about suicide
  • To recognise the ‘signs’ that may indicate someone is having thoughts of suicide
  • To consider how we can all contribute to a suicide safer community.

As the talk's content is of a sensitive nature, there are some rules that participants will be required to follow set out by PAPYRUS:

  • Cameras must be turned on throughout the talk so that the wellbeing/safeguarding representatives are able to see the participtants
  • Participants must advise the wellbeing/safeguarding representatives (Parasoc representative is Jemma Westwood) if they need to leave the session either through the chat function or via direct messaging
  • Should a participant turn off their video or leave without advising the wellbeing/safeguarding representative, they will be contacted immediately

Support for anyone affected by the talk can be accessed from the following places:

  • The Designated safeguarding/wellbeing representative from Parasoc (Jemma Westwood - email is westwo13@uni.coventry.ac.uk), or the safeguarding lead for PAPYRUS (contact details will be provided during the event)
  • Coventry University Welfare Support services (email welfare.ss@coventry.ac.uk) or the Counselling and Mental Health team (email counsell.ss@coventry.ac.uk)
  • Protection Services (while on campus or in university owned accomodation) call 024 7765 8555
  • PAPYRUS - Prevention of Young Suicide - call 0800 068 4141
  • Samaritans - call 116 123
  • Your GP or a mental health professional
  • Emergency Services - call 999/112 in an emergency or 111 for advice
